Santiago’s Obstacles by Joe D.

Hemingway depicts the story of an old man battling the obstacles of deep sea fishing and how to get past the rough times in an attempt to be triumphant. “The Old Man and the Sea” tells a tale of how an 84 year old fisherman, named Santiago, struggles to capture a gigantic marlin. The difficult series of events that Santiago goes through like maintaining a clear mind, slaughtering sharks, and reeling in that fish put him through an extreme test. When Santiago first gets a hold of the Marlin he has no idea that this noble marlin will take him on the ride of his life.

Santiago is severely limited because the dangerous sharks that are attacking his skiff keep him from reaching land without dieing. Santiago complains about the massive Mako shark taking a huge amount of the fish from him, “‘He took about forty pounds,’” the old man said aloud. He took my harpoon too and all the rope, he thought, and now my fish bleeds again and there will be others” (103). In this situation the old man is struggling to fight off the sharks because his goal is to reach land with the entire beast, but this might not be accomplished.

The fish that Santiago is trying to bring in is an astonishing 18 feet, so capturing this bad boy will be very difficult. Not only does the old man have to pull in the marlin, he has to suffer thoughout the entire adventure because of his hands cramping up and the scars along his back and palms are bleeding excessively. “He could not see the fish’s jumps but only heard the breaking of the ocean and the heavy splash as he fell. The speed of the line was cutting his hands badly… and he tried to keep the cutting across the calloused parts and not let the line slip into the palm nor cut the fingers” (82-83). Wrangling in this sea monster is described to be an arduous obstacle to overcome. There are multiple things occurring while he is pulling in the marlin, like nausea from the stench of the dolphin, and keeping his pain at a minimum.

Although the physical obstacles of battling the pain, fish, and sharks are very laborious, the number one thing for the old man to do is to keep his composure. A sharp mind is necessary when trying to stay alive out at sea. “Now you are getting confused in the head, he thought. You must keep your head clear…‘Clear up, head,’ he said in a voice he could hardly hear. ‘Clear up’” (92). A foggy mind will impair his choices and his reaction time will be as slow as an intoxicated person. If Santiago is to capture this humongous marlin, then he needs to be capable of conquering each and every one of his obstacles because having a strong body is pointless without a quick mind to control it.

Hemingway takes us on a thrilling adventure with the old man as he attempts to capture the magnificent marlin. The ferocious sharks attack the old man’s skiff on multiple occasions causing Santiago to fight them off with only the materials in the skiff. Throughout the quarrel between Santiago and the marlin, his hands are severely damaged, thus making the battle more intense. All of these obstacles are amplified with the effect of light-headedness and Santiago’s reactions slowing. Although Santiago’s path to success is a rocky one, filled with pain, suffering, and monsters of the deep, he is still able to overcome these feats in the end.

Joe-
Your story was good. I thought your thesis stement was pretty clear but it could have benn better. Your strongest body paragraph is probably your second one. You really showed how Santiago's hands were really affecting his fishing and he was struggling to capture the marlin. Also, I don't know how you know some of these words but I guess you used great vocab. One piece of advice that you sohlud take from a genius like me is to clearly state his three obstacles. I didn't know what they were after reading the first paragraph and I think you should have said them. Overall, It was a great story.

Joe-
Your essay was decent. The thesis statement wasnt too bad. It was rather clear. The only thing i dont agree with in your story was the thing about a clear mind. Suer it's important but i dont think it's as important as you say. I did like some of your word useage in the story. I think it helped with how dramatic the events were. I liked how you described the marlin as a sea monster because it kinda was at 18 feet long and 1000 pounds. In the end I thought your story was pretty good. There were some parts i really liked then some I didn't but you still did a great job.

This essay’s thesis is focused on the struggles that Santiago must face in order to survive and prosper. It is focused, and clearly stated in the introduction paragraph of the essay.

Of all the examples of quotes in this essay, this one was integrated the best into your essay: “‘He took about forty pounds,’” the old man said aloud. He took my harpoon too and all the rope, he thought, and now my fish bleeds again and there will be others” (103). Before and after you state the quote, you clearly describe it and what it means to the story.

This essay was interesting, and captivating, but its conclusion was the strongest part. I like the way you used strong vocabulary and details to keep the reader’s attention.

Next time you are asked to write an essay, you should be sure to double-check all of the facts that you use, that are not integrated using quotes. All over I enjoyed your story a lot.

Joe,
Nice essay! I really enjoyed reading it. Your voice in the story was great. I could practically hear you reading it. Your thesis was alright, but clear. I know you could have made it better. Your strongest paragraph was the one about Santiago's pain, even though you kinda got side tracked. I still liked it. Your essay was very engaging. It grabbed my attention and kept it until I had finished reading. I am actually not quite sure what I would do to make it better. Way to go!

I thought your story was very well written. The thesis statement about all of Santiago's obstacles was very clear but never stated what the obstacles specifically were. Your conclusion was your best paragraph because you summed up the story without repeating yourself. The vocab you used was very descriptive and slightly above your actual vocab level. Good use of a dictionary. There was nothing I would really change it was delightful.

Joe, nice job on your essay. Your thesis was clear, but I don’t think it actually stated what the obstacles were. Most of your body paragraphs were well put together. You sentence structure was okay, but I think you could have done better. I think your strongest paragraph was the one about Santiago’s pain because it was explained very clearly and your quote fit well. I really enjoyed reading your story because your vocabulary was very descriptive.

Joe d’alessandro……. Great story man. First off, your thesis was a little unclear. Besides that, you did and expendably wonderful job. You used good diction and described things greatly. I thought that your first paragraph was the best because you made a strong connection to the thesis and it had the best quote in it. My suggestions are to reread and maybe rewrite your thesis statement because it is very important to have a strong thesis statement. GREAT JOB MAN!

Joe,
Your story was very well written. I thought your thesis statement was very clear, but maybe could have been improved. I think you could have done a better job on is stating his three obstacles. My favorite paragraph was the second. I thought you did great describing Santiago's hand and how he was struggling to catch the marlin. I thought you did a very nice job tying your quotes into each paragraph. Great job, keep up the good work!

Good job on the essay. Your thesis statement was easy to depict and it showed what would come later in the essay. Your second paragraph was, in my opinion, the best one. Some of the vocab you used was very strong. You might want to improve on stating the three obstacles however. Some of your story wasn't clear or didn't have any supporting details, but all in all great job.

I thought your story was very good. The thesis never told what his obstacles were. I would try to proof read your essay and have someone else read it. Your conclusion was your best paragraph because you summed up the story without repeating yourself. I think your strongest paragraph was the one about Santiago’s pain.
